Sri Lanka vs England, 1st Test Day 1, 26 May 2011

The first match of the series with England and Sri Lanka in England, Sri Lanka have brought over a lot weaker team than they have in recent years but it is England that look strong in the tests match with the Ashes win. Strauss has said that Ashes win is just a stepping stone in what could be something big, they are eyeing the top spot in test cricket. They will have to beat both Sri Lanka and India in their tests series to become the top team but that will not be an easy task. England had a pretty mixed world cup campaign with some great results then some slumping results but the have a much stronger test team. James Anderson will be crucial with the ball to get early wickets as the conditions in England suit is bowling well and is one of the best swing bowlers in the world going around now. Morgan’s selection was thanks to a hundred in the warm up match and he would want to back that performance up in this first test.

The batting of Sri Lanka hasn’t lost anyone crucial, but the bowling is a lot less stronger then what it was last year with the loss of Murali, Malinga and Vaas in test cricket. The bowling strength really showed in the warm up matches not picking up wickets constantly so the new blokes will have to step up to the occasion. To fit the shoes of those 3 players are impossible but Herath, Fernando and Perera are quite strong bowlers and have featured in the ODI team for Sri Lanka. The team has 3 captains in it with former captains Jayawardene and Sangakkara while Dilshan has stepped up and taken over. It will be interesting if the power and extra work for Dilshan affects his batting as that has been a key point for Sri Lanka in recent series. Welegedara is quite young but played in the team last year and went well and he will be the bowler leading the attack along with Fernando.

Team News:
Broad is back for England so he will replace Finn from the Ashes team while Eoin Morgan squeezes into the team.

England- 1 Andrew Strauss (capt), 2 Alastair Cook, 3 Jonathan Trott, 4 Kevin Pietersen, 5 Ian Bell, 6 Eoin Morgan, 7 Matt Prior (wk), 8 Stuart Broad, 9 Graeme Swann, 10 Chris Tremlett, 11 James Anderson

With Pradeep out the replacement Dilhara Fernando is questionable but also Dilshan has said words that suggest Mahroof will get a look in.

Sri Lanka 1 Tillakaratne Dilshan (capt), 2 Tharanga Paranavitana, 3 Kumar Sangakkara, 4 Mahela Jayawardene, 5 Thilan Samaraweera, 6 Prasanna Jayawardene (wk), 7 Farveez Maharoof, 8 Thisara Perera, 9 Rangana Herath, 10 Dilhara Fernando, 11 Chanaka Welegedara

4th Innings

Ahmed picked up another early wicket of the opener Brathwaite who’s debut wouldn’t have impressed selectors. Simmons, Sarwan and Samuels were all victims of Rehman who was bowling wonderfully on this pacy pitch with his spin and the bounce he was getting picking up the 3 wickets just before lunch putting his team on top of the match. Bravo was trapped in front on 50 runs in the 2nd last over of the day and it was a crucial wicket so late in the day. Nash failed to hold out the attack and start his innings after the close of day and was gone for 30. Baugh was also given out early in the day from Rehman with a lbw being turned down but Pakistan reviewing it successfully. Sammy was playing incredibly risky for a team that were a few hundred runs behind and early on the 5th day. Sammy then went half hearted into a shot bowled by Saeed and was punished for the being dismissed before his half century. Rampaul and Roach tried their best with Rampaul going then Roach being run out well short of Pakistan’s total and Pakistan drew the series.

3rd Innings
The third innings for Pakistan started off quite quickly with Tafeeq Umar making quick work of the West Indies poor bowling with several boundaries to his name. Sammy produced another ball that did the batsman last test match but this time bowling Hafeez for 32. The West indies then picked up the wicket of Ali after finally taking a catch but Pakistan were 2/158 then and were in a very good position. Asad Shafiq would have felt hard done by when he was caught by Baugh with a stunner. That put Misbah Ul Haq in and him and Umar and that parntership lasted till stumps but then the next day they started it over again with the two playing well. Umar was run out after playing well but then Umar Akmal came in to score as many runs as possible and that forced Pakistan to declare for 377 giving West Indies the hard task of scoring 427 which looked unlikely.

West Indies vs Pakistan Highlights, 2nd Test Day-1, 20 May 2011

Pakistan Squad: Abdur Rehman, Asad Shafiq, Azhar Ali, Hammad Azam, Junaid Khan, Misbah-ul Haq (c), Mohammad Hafeez, Mohammad Salman (wk), Saeed Ajmal, Tanvir Ahmed, Taufeeq Umar, Umar Akmal, Umar Gul, Wahab Riaz, Younis Khan.

West Indies Squad: Brendan Nash, Carlton Baugh (wk), Darren Bravo, Darren Sammy (c), Devendra Bishoo, Devon Smith, Fidel Edwards, Kemar Roach, Lendl Simmons, Marlon Samuels, Ramnaresh Sarwan, Ravi Rampaul, S Chanderpaul.

Preview:

Call it a batting failure, home team bowling better than Pakistan or minefield of a pitch that batsmen from either side could master, end result would have pleased fans across the Caribbean Islands. At last, a test win over a side other than Bangladesh courtesy a disciplined bowling effort and well aided by mindless batting from the opposition batsmen.
Under fire skipper Darren Sammy led from the front to fizzle out Pakistan challenge with a five wicket haul in the fourth innings. He didn’t do anything fancy, just landed the ball on the right spot and let the pitch do the rest. Sammy heroics were well complemented by his debutant Devendra Bishoo and fast bowler Ravi Rampaul to fashion out a welcome victory in what was a gripping test.
Despite their batsmen not coming to the grips, home team kept the pressure on Pakistan not letting them to dominate the proceedings one bit. The difference between the two sides was the fact that home team could make most of the slowish pitch, fast bowlers bowling more straightish length than their Pakistan counterparts yielding results in their favour. In batting senior batsman Shiv Chanderpaul after left out of ODI series was amongst the runs and emerging Lendl Simmons had a good outing also but rest of them had no clue to the variations, doosras in particular, of off-spinner Saeed Ajmal.
Not only should the win be a morale boosting one for embattled that has hardly won anything in the longer format for last three years or so, it will also make Sammy, who has been under quash ever since his appointment as West Indies skipper, a better leader. All these things augur well for the overall setup of the team and fans would be hoping win at Guyana signals good things for West Indian cricket.
The real challenge for the home team lies to live up to the favourites tag that they go into the second with their opponents, not different to them in many ways, Pakistan have problems of plenty on their plate.
For Pakistan, yet another batting failure came to haunt their prospects of doing well on the foreign pitches. Despite back to back spell from Ajmal, batsmen let their side down leading to one of the Pakistan’s worst defeats in the recent times to a side that, at best, was expected to give them a good fight.
What led to the downfall of most of the Pakistan batters was their preference to play with the pads rather than with the bat on a pitch that had a variable bounce. Like in the past, good starts were squandered to some ugly shots reinforcing the belief that Pakistan is one of the weakest batting sides in the world. Also, Pakistan were unable to seize the key moments in the game which their opponents did so well.
With chance for a maiden test series win lost thanks to a loss in first test, Pakistan sole aim will be to square the series and save themselves from further embarrassment. To make it a reality, runs have to come from somewhere and senior batsmen Mohammad Hafeez and skipper Misbah-ul Haq himself need to mentor young batting brigade. Fielding needs an improvement as well and close catching fielders have to be on toes to make look Ajmal and co. more effective.Misbah would be buoyed by the latest development with Pakistan Cricket Board handing him ODI captaincy as well after relegating controversial Shahid Afridi from the post. This should add extra spring to Misbah’s captaincy which wasn’t at its best last test.
Having said that, it is a well known fact that Pakistan play their best cricket when their backs are against the wall. For this particular reason, West Indies should be ready for Pakistan backlash.

Part 3

The limited over fixtures between the two sides went without much of a drama with score line reading 3-2 in favour of Pakistan. The visitors were expected to win the series but conceding last two matches to a weakened West Indies lineup would have disappointed them. Pakistan might have won the series but they didn’t set the tour on fire and couldn’t unearth new talent which the team management was hoping for.
For West Indies that lacked experience and star players, there were more than one positive from the series. Lendl Simmons’s consistency with the bat at the top of the order and the emergence of talented leg spinner Devendra Bishoo who bamboozled Pakistan batsmen with his control, guile and variations were the highlights of the one-day series.
Now focus shifts to the ‘real’ cricket, Test matches as both teams look for resurgence in the format. Off late, not much has been achieved by the team in the test cricket with home team lurking as low as eighth in the ICC rankings. Pakistan too have nothing to show in their CV in the last two years or so save for an odd test win against Australia and England. Appointment of calm headed Misbah-ul-Haq as captain though has ignited a kind of revival as Pakistan did draw two match test series against strong South Africa following it up with a better result 1-0 against New Zealand in same number of matches.
Home team will be buoyed by their performance in the ODI series and would like to continue the same in the longer version of the game. The return of run machine Shiv Chanderpaul who was snubbed by selectors for ODI’s that led a flurry of anti-management and anti-board comments from the left hander and fit again Fidel Edwards should bolster the overall setup of the team.
All eyes will be on Simmons and Bishoo, both set for a test debut, as both have been dubbed as shinning lights for the Caribbean cricket in the times of desperation. Bishoo will complete the bowling lineup that will have fast bowling trio of Ravi Rampaul, Edwards and Kemar Roach. Skipper Darren Sammy will be expected to play as a supporting role in the bowling department and bat at number six to give team flexibility of sorts.
Chanderpaul will again be expected to shoulder the batting responsibilities and runs are due from Marlon Samuels and Ramnaresh Sarwan as well. Real treat for home team batsmen will be how they tackle off-spinner Saeed Ajmal who they found very difficult to pick during ODI’s.
For Pakistan, a major blow came days ahead of the test match when their numero uno batsman had to fly back to attend funeral of his brother. This has made batting lineup thin on experience which would mean skipper Misbah has to provide stability to the middle order. The young brigade of batsmen-Asad Shafiq, Azhar Ali and Umar Akmal- have shown a lot of promise and would need to step to the occasion to make their talent and potential count.

Bowling department will have more teeth as senior operator Umar Gul is back after opting out of first leg of the tour. He will have services of Wahab Riaz and Ajmal to help the side for elusive test series win in the West Indies. It will be toss up between left arm pacer Junaid Khan and left arm spinner Abdur Rehman and in all likelihood the nature of the wicket will determine whether Junaid makes his debut tomorrow or not.
All said and done, a tough battle between the two relatively young sides is on cards. While Windies may have their nose ahead due to home advantage, Pakistan will say they have tasted test match victories in the recent Past which home team has failed to do.
